Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” – Albert Einstein

Using theatre as an educational tool for academia and community, the teachers training workshop is an ideal platform to assist educators seeking knowledge of theatre elements that could be applied in teaching core subjects using imagination. The training programme is designed to increase knowledge base, develop skills, promote age-specific learning, documentation, to teach how to act, direct and watch plays and learn through a different method of training.

The three day training programme, which is part of Theatre-in-Education developed by Script Peoples Theatre builds on improvisational theatre techniques that could be used to help participants engage their students in the learning process. It helps them to creatively integrate writing and performing arts into their content area of teaching. This is a unique effort to build synergy between classroom education and theatrical concepts.

This process oriented learning is also an excellent way of teaching invaluable social and life skills such as interpersonal communication, team-building, creative problem solving, leadership, critical thinking, group decision-making and self expression. The proportion of education and theatre needs to be carefully planned to fit into each specific educational development framework.

Teachers, facilitators, lecturers, functionaries of child care institutions and people who work with children, youth and trainers are eligible to participate. Accommodation at the Christ University guest house will be provided for outstation participants.

Trainers Mohammed Arif and Venkatesh D.K conducted a 12 hour theatre training for a group of 15 employees of Samsung from 24th August – 28th August. The objective of the theatre intervention was to convey employee issues to the management in a creative manner during their Open House. Thereby the concerns could be viewed objectively and would be a prelude before taking action.

For Samsung, this was a very innovative decision. Over a few meetings, they conveyed the content for the presentation. The performers had little or no formal theatre experience prior to this. On the last day of the training, they performed a 15 minute theatre presentation which was welcomed with open arms by the management and the employees. The performance used creativity while at the same time not losing the focus of the exercise. Movement, song, visuals combined to create a very entertaining and thought provoking experience.

Trainer Shivaraj conducted a four session children’s theatre workshop of a duration of 8-10 hours for Emeralds Events. There were 15 children. Shivraj guided them through an introductory theatre experience. The objective was to inculcate an interest in theatre among children and to develop team spirit among the participants.

The workshop was conducted from 1 August to 22 August. A tale from the Panchatantra – ‘The Brahmin and three thugs’ was staged as a performance incorporating the participants.

Script Peoples Theatre presents it’s annual flagship production Vision 2020 – Michael Angel Oh! at the Christ University auditorium on Saturday, July 25, 2009 at 7.00 pm. The play is directed by Sibu Vaz and Mohammed Arif. The script consultant has been Dr. K.Y Naryanaswamy and the play is written by Umesh.P.N. The production features 85 actors in the age group of 6 – 50 years.

This year’s Vision 2020 production focuses on how people perceive and interpret life experiences. This idea is placed before the audience through the eyes of the Italian Renaissance era poet, painter, sculptor, engineer and genius Michelangelo. The story is about how Michelangelo goes in search of “God” and “Judas” who he wants to capture as a painting. The events that colour this search leave Michelangelo, and in the process the audience, with some soul-searching experiences.

Since 2006, three Vision 2020 productions – India Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (2006), The Trilogy(2007) and Alexander (2008) have been staged.

Tickets for the production are priced at Rs.200, 150 & 100. You can book tickets online at www.indianstage.in or call 98450-75825 / 6450-4665.
